ADSL
ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line coverage is available to about 80% of the UK. It is the most likely choice unless you live somewhere isolated, or in an area where cable is available.
ADSL broadband is delivered through your existing BT telephone line, using a special modem called a router. You do not need to have an additional telephone line and you will be still be able to make and receive calls whilst using the internet.
An ADSL connection requires you to fit small devices called microfilters to all your phone sockets. These are needed to prevent the ADSL signal from interfering with your phone calls. Your ISP will normally provide you one or two microfilters but, if you need any more they only cost a few pounds from the usual suppliers.
Although you must have a BT telephone line, there are many ADSL Internet providers to choose from, each offering a wide selection of packages.
